THE GARMENTS OF THE PRIESTHOOD INTRODUCTION One of the most
intriguing studies in the Old Testament are those which are enshrouded with innumerable types and shadows. We find tremendous insights concerning the scriptures in the New Testament through revelation concerning what God set
forth as a pattern in the past. Great truths have been hidden within these beautiful typologies that spoke of the Messiah, the Son of God who was to come. Yet, these hidden things were not to remain a mystery forever,
rather they were to be revealed to a generation of people who would be called by His name. To behold Jesus and the work that was wrought through His life, death, burial and resurrection through the Old Testament
patterns is indeed a beautiful wonder that grips the heart of those who seek His face. Truths which have been hidden from the heart through the law are now being revealed in our hearts through grace no longer to remain a
mystery. To multitudes, the Tabernacle of the Congregation in the Wilderness was just a tent; the garments of the High Priest were nothing more than mere fabric; the offerings nothing more than sacrifices; and the feasts were
nothing more than times of remembrance and celebration for a people of former times. After the children of Israel were delivered out of the land of Egypt, God revealed to Moses that he desired to tabernacle himself in
the midst of His people. He gave him instruction in regards to building the Tabernacle of the Congregation in the Wilderness, to the feats and the offerings, and the making of the garments of the priesthood. He told Moses to
make everything according to the pattern. According to all that I show thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make I". Exodus 25:9 "And
look that thou make them after their pattern, which was showed thee in the mount". Exodus 25:40 "And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty. And thou shalt speak unto all that are
wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron's garments to consecrate him, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office" Exodus 28:2-3 These garments were not just run-of-the-mill clothing. They were garments of extraordinary beauty which were to testify of who Jesus is, the magnificent work which He would wrought in a people, and the ongoing revelation of that work in manifested form in the lives of man. These garments which were a shadow of things which were to come, found their fulfillment in Christ and now have an ongoing manifestation in the lives of His people. Today, our Father is raising up a people clothed with the nature and character of Christ to be made "kings and priests unto God, the Father". A people who would no longer strive to be righteous and holy, but would understand that Jesus has imputed His righteousness and made His people to be partakers of His holiness. A people who would not any longer be 'trying' to be in the Spirit, rather ones who would realize that they 'ARE' in the Spirit and that He has caused each one to be one Spirit with Him. Yes, man was no longer to be frustrated by one's own works and efforts, but would awaken truth and abide in the grace of HIS FINISHED WORK! A people who would realize that He sees the end from the beginning and that the manifestation of that finished work which He has wrought concerning our lives is openly manifested by grace through faith
CHAPTER ONE THE PRIESTLY PROGRESSION Our journey begins with the book of Genesis where we find that each person served as their own priest. All were to bring their own offerings and sacrifices before the Lord. In the book of Exodus while the children of Israel were in Egypt, the head of each family served as priest for his entire household. But God's ultimate desire went far beyond this point as he said to Moses: "Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him. And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD. And the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD. And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes, And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai." Exodus 19:5-11 From the beginning, God's ultimate desire was to have a kingdom of priests
and to have personal communication and relationship with each and every one. Even after the fall of Adam, God's personal desire and ultimate purpose never changed. Through the fall however, man in his own heart felt condemned and
alienated from God so that he fled and hid from God's presence, and we still see that happening today. If we look a It the scripture closely we find that the LORD God was calling to Adam for fellowship. "And the eyes of them
both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid
themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was
naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat"? Genesis 3:7-11 We all know that God is
the omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent God and that He knew exactly where Adam was when He called out to Him in the garden. The knowledge of Adam's nakedness was not given to him by God but rather it was the carnality to which he
had fallen that made him aware of his new state of being. Father didn't come with accusation nor condemnation, but rather in His love. He simply asked "where art thou?" It was only when Adam confessed of his nakedness that God
demanded "WHO TOLD THEE THAT THOU WAST NAKED"! Again, in Exodus 20:18-19, "And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the
people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die". God came down to speak with His people we find the same principle
of falleness till active in the lives of man. NAKEDNESS! Thus they became frightened for they knew God was holy and so withdrew from the Lord and pleaded with Moses to speak with God FOR them. And so God began to instruct
Moses anew and gave to him the pattern for the Tabernacle, the feasts and offerings, and direction concerning the priesthood. His ultimate will was to tabernacle Himself in the midst of His people. Aaron and his
descendants were to be the priests and all of the Levites outside the family of Aaron were to be servants to the holy things of God. And even then, although God had set in order a priesthood, He still did not have his deepest
desire to communicate and have relationship with man. Numbers 1:49-53 "Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum of them among the children of Israel: But thou shalt appoint the
Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the vessels thereof, and over all things that belong to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the vessels thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round
about the tabernacle. And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down: and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.
And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man his own standard, throughout their hosts. But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no
wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony." We can see clearly the pattern that was being established and how it relates to us even
still today. Aaron is the typology of Jesus Christ, his five sons were types of the five-fold ministry, and the Levites are a picture of our deacons and elders that we have in the church today. (Note: all priests had to be
Levites, but not all Levites were priests) Now through Moses the order of priesthood was set but there would come one who would be a priest for himself, his family, all nations, and the church (all peoples). This man not only would
be a priest, but would issue forth a kingdom of priests through reconciliation and his name is JESUS! Today He is seated at the right hand of the Father interceding for all the saints and we are seated in heavenly places in
Him (Ephesians 2:6)! QUALIFICATIONS Priests: These were to be Levites of the family of Aaron and their claim to office would be that of sonship and their duties were to minister the holy things of God and worship Him.
High Priest: There could only be one high priest at a time and from Aaron to Christ there were 80 that served. Aaron was the first High Priest and he was succeeded by his sons and their descendant sons. Great High Priest: The Office of Great High Priest was one that would come much later and be established and filled by Jesus Christ. This priesthood was after the order of Melchizedek and would not be inherited
by birth nor would it ever be passed on. MELCHIZEDEK PRIESTHOOD Melchizedek is first seen in Genesis 14:18-20 as He was the first King of Salem
(Jerusalem) and the High Priest of El Elyon, the Most High God (Hebrews 7:13). The name Melchizedek means: King of righteousness, justice, righteous rule, and righteous judgment. The nature of this priesthood was manifested
2000 years before it was established in Christ and 400 years before the Aaronic order was established. The significance of the appearance of Melchizedek was not realized until it was later uttered by David in Psalm 110:4. Even
though this priest was in the earth in the beginning, there was a separation of time before the ministry of this priest would be manifested once again and be established in the earth by Jesus, the Son of God. The
Aaronic Priesthood was ordained and established by God for a season for a ministry which was of the law and was ever changing being continuously disrupted by death making it imperfect before God the Father. It was because of this
that it lacked the ability to serve the kingdom of God in a perfect way. It is through the shortcomings and inadequacy of this ministry of law that the throne room ministry of grace is clearly contrasted and found to be a
mercy poured forth without measure through the order of Melchizedek. This Melchizedek Priesthood WAS and IS still ordained today. It WAS and IS a never changing, never ending priesthood being perpetual in its nature without ending
or beginning. Jesus said in Revelation 1:8 "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty." The ministry of Jesus is
everliving, all effacious, ever present, and is an intercessory ministry for His own (John 17:1-22 and Hebrews 7:24-25). It always was, and is, and is to come! The perfect priesthood desired by the Father could only
come in the fullness of times according to John 17:1 and Galatians 4:4. The book of Hebrews graphically illustrates the shortcomings and failure of the Aaronic priesthood and establishes a picture of something of a much higher
order. A priesthood which would fulfill all requirements and establish a ministry that would be complete and perfect within itself never passing away. This new priesthood was one which would be established by Jesus Christ of whom
it would be proclaimed to be forever after the order of Melchizedek. "And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, Who is made, not after the law of a carnal
commandment, but after the power of an endless life, For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec". Hebrews 7:15-17 The functions of the office of priest, Aaron's priestly
garments, and all of the rituals were instructive concerning the person and the work of Jesus Christ. Although Jesus is our Great High Priest, He executes His priestly ministry after the PATTERN of Aaron. In
Hebrews 7 the ORDER of the priesthood is expounded, and in Hebrews 9 the PATTERN of the priesthood is expounded. This priesthood was a ministry of:
(a) Prophet, Priest, & King (b) Unlimited, Eternal, Unchangeable (c) One Who Is the Source of an Endless Life (d) Universal (All men without prejudice)
(e) Springs from Judah (brings praise) (f) Brings perfection (g) Puts away the curse of sin, sickness, poverty, and death.
Consider the following points concerning this priesthood. It was:
1. UNIQUE - One eternal, ever-living priest 2. UNIVERSAL - Existed before the Jew and Gentile became a separated people (all are one in Jesus Christ and there is neither Greek nor Jew (Galatians
3:28 and Colossians 3:11) 3. UNCHANGING - Both the priest and the ministry are the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 7:11-25 and Hebrews 13:8) 4. UNIFORM - Both Jesus and Melchizedek had the same
office and title - Priest of the Most High God and the King of Righteousness.
Melchizedek as the King of Peace met Abraham as he returned from war and brought him bread and wine. Jesus as our King of Peace has destroyed our enemies for us and He reigns as the King of Peace in our hearts
and has brought His gift of life through His blood (wine / Spirit) and His flesh (bread / life) John 6 as both man and God. He has brought to us Himself and made us to be partakers of His divine nature. Likewise the kingdom of
priests who have followed Him are one with Him in the Melchizedek order. CALLED: Aaron and his sons were called (Exodus 28:1) by God. When the people rebelled (Numbers 16:41-50), God caused His rod (a
branch of wood that had been cut away and was dead) to bud, thereby proving that the appointment of Aaron was of God (Numbers 17:1-13). The rod was dead, but God gave it life (brought forth resurrection). Jesus was
called (John 1:29); He was rejected (Mark 8:31 and Luke 17:25); He was dead and now He lives (Romans 1:4 and 6:4 "resurrection"). Revelation1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for
evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. We, as the body of Christ have been called according to (1Peter 1:15 and 2:9) and we have eternal life (John 3:16). We were buried and rose with Him
(Colossians 2: 12). Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.) The grave cannot hold us (1Corinthians 15); we are joint heirs
(Romans 8:17); an eternal priesthood with Him (Revelation 1:6) & (Revelation 5:10). Our call today is to see men won to Christ and established in their "most holy faith" through the unfolding of God's word and
the encouragement of God's people to a deeper life of sanctification. CLEANSED: Aaron and his sons had to be washed publicy before going into the Tabernacle. They were cleansed before the people by Moses, who
represents to us a type of Christ (Exodus 29:4and Ezekiel 36:25), also a type of regeneration. Jesus, because of His sinless and didn't need cleansing He was publicly baptized by John (Matthew 3:13-17) According to
the righteousness of the law, both as the lamb that had to be washed before it could be sacrificed and the priest who had to be washed before He could minister and handle the holy things of God. Let us remember that although He was
the Word Incarnate (John 12:1, 14). He fulfilled all righteousness on behalf of His creation. Public baptism is for us a proclamation of our cleansing from sin and our calling into the kingdom of God. It
bespeaks of the old things of our lives passing away and all things becoming as new (2Corinthians 5:17) thereby becoming enabled to walk in the newness of life. It is at this point that we become positioned for the renewing of our
minds with the washing by the water of the Word (John 15:3 and Ephesians 5:26). It is through the continual renewing that sanctification and equipping for ministry begins to take place. It is important for one to understand that
our spirit IS whole and sanctified, it is in the area of our minds that wholeness and sanctification is a process that this can only take place by the renewing of our minds with the Word of God. Just as the priests of old had to be
washed publicly so it was with Jesus and so it is with us today. CLOTHED: Aaron, his sons, and the rest of the priesthood that God was establishing had to be clothed (covered) in a particular way
in order to administer the things of God. (Exodus 29:59) The level of priesthood could be easily determined by the garments which they wore. Jesus was covered and clothed with a heavenly garment which was the Holy Ghost (John 1:33
and John 3:34). He was fully equipped and covered for a complete and powerful ministry which would minister to both God and man. Today we also have been afforded the same privileges of ministry. Today, we are clothed (covered)
not only with the blood of Jesus, but with His very life. "For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ" Galatians 2:27. CONSECRATED: Sin Offering: A
young bullock had to be used for this offering. It had to be strong, vigorous, productive, and able to carry a load.. The young bullocks were used to give redemption and cleansing through the blood that was shed. We can
easily see how this speaks of Jesus and what He did for us. Just as the priests of old, we as the priests of the Lord offer the blood of Jesus as we bring others into salvation. The Burnt Offerings always involved two
rams which were the animals of substitution. One was for substitution in sacrifice and the other in consecration.
The Sacrifice: 1. The priests would lay their hands upon the head of the ram which speaks to us of total commitment, imputation of sin and identification. 2. The sacrifice was cut
into pieces exposing everything to Moses. Following this, the priests were then able to offer the burnt offering on behalf of others. 3. The inward parts were then washed which represented the cleansing of hidden desires,
aspirations, motives, etc.
4. Then the legs were washed representing the walk or that which upholds.
5. Then the priest would place the pieces with the head. This speaks of the body which is us being with the Head (Jesus).
6. Then the whole ram (head and body) was offered which represents that we died WITH Him and corporate commitment.
There were two Rams that were used. One was for offering and the other was for consecration).
Both oil and blood were used together to anoint the priests and this mixture was sprinkled also on their garments (covering) and around the altar (place of sacrifice and offering). The oil symbolized the Holy
Spirit and the anointing and the blood symbolized the sacrifice and the cleansing. The right side of the body of the priest symbolized authority, divine government, and that which was right.
Blood from the ram and the anointing oil were applied to the right ear, right thumb, and right toe of the priests. The blood was applied to the ear for the priests to have hearing ears, to be sensitive to the laws of God, and
to hear the confessions of the people. They were not to be given over to gossip (Isaiah 54:6 and Psalm 40:6-8). It was also applied to the right thumb for their service, work, and ministry to do the bidding of God and the
handling of the offerings for both God and the people. Their service was not for gold for their reward was acceptable services. (1Timothy 6:18-19; 2Thessalonians 3:13; Colossians 4:23; and Galatians 6:9). Blood was applied
to right toe for their ability to walk holy before the Lord. They were to be led by the Spirit and not moved according to the dictates of their own hearts (Romans 8:14; Galatians 5:16; Ephesians 4:1; and 1John 2:6). 2. Unleavened Bread & Oil: These items represented the Word and the Holy Spirit (1Corinthians 5:7-8). The Unleavened bread was made with wheat flour and without leaven. The original
condition (identity) of the flour had to be sifted and ground up (changed) for the making of the bread. Through the new birth, sin is removed from us and our original condition is changed. We become one bread with Him and sin
is removed from us. 3. One Basket: One basket is important in relationship to us because although we are many in the body of Christ, there is only one Church in the earth. Jesus prayed in
John 17 that we would all be one, just as He is one with the Father and with us. We have been destined to come into the unity of the faith and to be one body with Jesus the head (1Corinthians 10:17 and 1Corinthians 12:12).
The priests were required to obey all the instructions of God and through the sacrifices they interceded between man and God. Today Jesus fulfills that function on our behalf. According to Hebrews
7:25-26, "Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate
from sinners, and made higher than the heavens". As the children of God, we too are ambassadors of reconciliation and called to intercede. The priests didn't have an earthly inheritance for Jehovah was their
possession and their needs were bountifully supplied through their brethren. (Note Judges 17 and 18) who demanded his salary and apparel, etc., until a 'larger church' opened to him). We are all High Priests with Jesus being our
Great High Priest. Although we no longer offer sacrifices according to the law, we do offer Christ to those before us. We are a royal priesthood and a holy nation which has been set apart unto Him. As priests unto Him, we no
longer have to gaze from the outer courts, but we now have access through a new and living way which is Jesus Christ. We can now enter the presence of our God and stand before the heavenly throne. Hebrews 4:16 (the mercy seat).
CHAPTER TWO DISQUALIFICATIONS FOR PRIESTS (Leviticus 21:17-24 - Numbers 3:10 Numbers 8) Under the law there were certain characteristics
which would disqualify one from serving as a priest. As we take a look at them, we begin to see their spiritual significance concerning the priesthood (body of believers) of today. If we are the children of God, then according
to Peter and John, we are a kingdom of priests. "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness
into his marvelous light:" 1 Peter 2:9 "And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen." Revelation 1:6
The disqualifications were as follows:
SUPERFLUOUS In the Hebrew this word means to be deformed by excess of members:stretch out self, (have any) superfluous thing. So we see that it is an outward manifestation of
something which doesn't belong there and also that it is something that is not needed. A gourder is an outward growth on one's body and it is ugly and oftentimes hideous in it's appearance and certainly doesn't have any
purpose. Continuously man has added to the Word of God through their doctrines, traditions, creeds, theology, thoughts, likes and dislikes, opinions, etc. So many today know about god and try to minister through
that experience, but unless you KNOW them through relationship, you can never convey to another the life of that person. So it is with the LORD. Israel knew the ACTS of god, but Moses knew His WAYS! It wasn't
enough for the Apostle Paul to know about God, but his heart cried "O THAT I MIGHT KNOW HIM IN THE POWER OF HIS RESURRECTION"!!! Paul didn't just want Him, he wanted His LIFE! Through his pursuit of Him,
Paul was able to give us the TRUTH AND LIFE of Jesus; not frivolous doctrines that were void of substance and full of empty promises. Invariably when the Holy Spirit is moving, there will usually be someone who will try
to add to the situation through their own actions and words. When flesh gets involved it is just like a big ugly gourder! Many take their experiences in the Lord and form them into doctrines, not understanding that
our beliefs are not to be based on His acts, but rather they are to be based on HIM!!! Do we understand that the ministry of god is LIGHT and LIFE and is all-sufficient in itself. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the
beginning and the end. In Him consists all things and all things are complete in Him. Many would add even to what was wrought through the work of the Cross! Jesus declared "IT IS FINISHED"!!
Everything has been dealt with in His sacrifice and in the Spirit and the expression of it is now being released in manifestation. A priest MUST be in one mind and one accord with the Spirit of God ministering out of the
oneness.
1. what was the hope of HIS calling 2. what are the riches of the glory of HIS inheritance in the saints 3. the exceeding greatness of HIS power toward us who believe 4. according to the
working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated HIM at His right hand in the heavenly places,
far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.
We cannot understand God and His infinite truths with our natural mind or our natural understanding. In Isaiah 55 we read that as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are His ways higher than our ways
and His thoughts than our thoughts. And in 1Corinthians the 2nd
Chapter the Father tells us: But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them,
because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ. To have partial vision is to be lacking in understanding and knowledge. We are to know the TRUTH for it is the TRUTH that sets us free. With understanding, we can go on to PERFECTION and understand the full council of HIS Word know what His will is for our lives and HIS purpose and plan for all creation. Let us open our hearts and set our minds to understand and SEE fully with understanding.
